A native of New Hampshire, award-winning songwriter Rick Lang has become well known in the global Bluegrass community and beyond. His songs have been covered by some of the most renowned artists in Bluegrass music, Southern Gospel and even the Jazz world, with over 80 song cuts to his credit.

Rick has now released his album “Gonna Sing, Gonna Shout” on the Billy Blue Records Label. The stellar lineup of Bluegrass, Country, and Gospel stars lending their talents to deliver Lang’s original songs includes Dave Adkins, High Road, Marty Raybon, The Whites, Claire Lynch, Bradley Walker, Cox Family, Kenny and Amanda Smith, Larry Cordle, and Jerry Salley. Rick talks about the journey it took to write and record this project.

“We have been fortunate enough to follow Rick’s artistic journey through his last several projects. Rick is a master songwriter and storyteller who simply has a remarkable gift of his craft. His songs stir the soul and unlock simple truths. The way all great songwriters do.

His projects are always beautifully recorded and arranged, typically, bringing in the musician’s musicians to take his songs soaring to another level.

On his new project, ‘The Undertow’, Rick has released a folk roots masterwork. A concept album of songs, connected to the ocean & sea that are woven together like a fine tapestry. The inspiration comes from Rick’s own life’s experience, family ancestry, in addition to real-life stories the message is universal. Like when the young boy simply holds up the shell to his ear in the heart tugging acoustic track “Treasures in the Sand”. Like the ocean, the songs can be vast and mysterious like “Keep the Lights Burning Abby” or “Shipwreck of Love” or the more intimate and familiar like the bluegrass flavored “Massachusetts Turnpike”.

In March 2018, Rick’s new concept album “The Undertow” was launched. Living near the NH coastline all his life, it is not surprising that several of Rick’s original songs have ocean themes & settings. He picked a dozen of them to record on this most unique concept album. The story lines in the songs are all based on, or inspired by, real life stories, personal experiences, and places Rick has frequented since childhood. The fabric of the ocean interweaves seamlessly throughout the verses and choruses from beginning to end. Performing with Rick on “The Undertow” are several of the area musicians he has performed with, recorded with, and written with over the course of the last thirty years. The end result is a masterfully produced, heart- warming one-of-a-kind music release guaranteed to captivate the listener.

“My Daddy’s Shoes”

I’m beyond thrilled to announce the release of a new single “My Daddy’s Shoes” on RLM Records. It’s a song I wrote to honor Fathers Day, and is based on my relationship with my dad who tragically passed away in 1989. It took me nearly 30 years to come up with the words to properly pay tribute to my dads life in song. When I was just a boy I would sneak into dads bedroom while he was at work, slip into a pair of his shoes, and walk around in them for hours at a time. I also used to put on some of his clothes and pretend I was him for a while. It was a sight to see! When we were young my dad held down two full time jobs, worked 7 days a week, to try & provide for our large family of 6. He also contributed a great deal to the betterment of our community in what little spare time he had. Dad was always there to lend a hand when someone was in need, and was known far and wide. Though not rich in material wealth, dad was rich with the many friends he made during his lifetime

In the writing of this song I attempted to pay tribute to my dad and what he stood for. I know I could never fill his shoes, but have tried hard to follow the example he set. It is my hope that  “My Daddy’s Shoes” resonates with all those who hear it, and that the song adds additional meaning to the Father’s Day Tradition.
